An example being a temporary intervention at (the former) Chiltern Sculpture Park: The In-between which was also accompanied by a web project titled Follow The Trail. Projects / Events include works in public rural and urban spaces.
Crossing different boundaries, The In-between investigated the sculptural possibilities of drawing and the phenomenology of physical and digital space. The project spanned actual geographical terrain; the virtual space of the internet and the darker reaches of personal fantasy.
The visual tropes of science-fiction, fairytales, folklore and horror were utilised to explore how old and familiar discourses can easily take hold of cultural fantasies when faced with serious threat. Like many of these narrative structures, the concern of the work was more with situation than with character. The In-between marked a formal shift in Gill’s art practice but her ongoing enquiry into liminality, continues to invoke the hazards of accessing unconscious psychic space, as well as the attraction towards an escape beyond everyday reality.
